The Meaning of The Super Blood Moon September 27 2015, 0 Comments

We have all seen a full moon at some point in out lives- weather you're driving home, taking an evening walk with a significant other, or just sitting outside on a nice night looking at the stars and there it is: The Full Moon. The bright, round, cheesy-like orb in the sky- but tonight, we are in store for a special treat. On this night if you look up in the sky on 7:11pm, you will find the sun, moon, and earth lining up during a full moon resulting in a rare total lunar eclipse of a super moon! How freaking cool is that?!
But what is a blood moon exactly and what does this rare occurrence signify?
The full moon almost always appears a coppery shade of red during a lunar eclipse due to the sunlight that is filtered and refracted by the Earth's atmosphere. This is known as the "Blood Moon" or Hunter's Moon by early Native American tribes. These names were then adopted by colonials and here we are now in 2015 witnessing our fourth out of four (Tetra) full moons over 2014/2015. The Earth's shadow can be seen creeping across the moon's face until it has completely covered the moon. Then, when the moon is fully covered by the Earth's shadow- the blood red tinge will appear. 
What does it all mean?
The simple answer is, no one really knows. We do know that full moons have been known to impact the tides, and human beings are 70% water. Some believe that full moons effect the body's circadian rhythm. Some ancient cultures believe that full moons and the lunar cycle has an effect on woman's fertility and hormones. Astrologers believe that as this full moon falls in the first degree of Aries (a very agressive fire sign) this eclipse is associated with assertiveness, action, and individualism. You may feel the need to let that certain someone know how you feel about them or something that has been bothering you that you feel the need to get off of your chest. Things might be feeling a bit stirred up during this time, but try to keep your cool and not react till you have worked through whatever it is that is bugging you.
Full moons are also known to signify a new beginning or significant change. This would be a great time to reflect on the people or things in your life and letting go of the ones that are no longer bringing positivity to you. This may be a time when a light bulb goes off and you have a realization or "a-ha" moment. Things are changing and we are all active participants in the changes happening in our lives as well as the lives of others.
With it's mysterious connotations and shorter days, make sure to embrace the lunar cycle and as we transition into a new season, take a moment to appreciate the changes going on around you, set an intention, and devote some time to watch this super blood moon eclipse from a nice, quiet place.

Crystals: The Many Faces and Meanings of Quartz September 13 2015, 0 Comments

When I was a little girl, I was obsessed with crystals and gems. Anytime I could get my hands on one at the nature store in the mall or at the gift shop of a museum, I would beg my mom to buy me one to add to my collection of majestic beauties. Sometimes I would get lucky and randomly find one somewhere and it would be the happiest day when I could add another gem to my collection of beautiful, sparkling, awesomeness. Each of my beloved crystals sat next to the other, in a row on my dresser like a it's own little museum of magical wonders, but I never really thought about why I was so drawn to them and fascinated by them.

Fast forward 20 years later, and I'm still obsessed. Nowadays, I adore collecting jewelry with amethyst, quartz, or rose quartz attached to a long chain or on a ring. I even display my rings and necklaces on random chunks of crystal rock that I buy at jewelry shows, antique fairs, or a fun store on a road trip somewhere. But what do they all mean?

Here's a breakdown of the top three most commonly coveted crystals and what they all mean and how to use them in your day to day life.

Quartz

Quartz is actually the most common stone on the planet. Many colors of quartz have their own names (purple quartz is Amethyst, pink quartz is Rose Quartz), but the traditional clear quartz is the most commonly referred to crystal. The origin of the word 'quartz' is not known, but many ancient cultures had traditional uses for quartz. Ancient Japanese folklore believed quartz formed from the breath of a white dragon (if that's not the coolest fun fact ever, I don't know what is). Australian aborigines used quartz in rain rituals and even crystal balls used by gypsies and fortune tellers are made of quartz! Quartz can be icy clear or contain bubbles and variations.

Meanings: Power, Energy, Clarity

Quartz is said to enhance thoughts, direct or amplify energy, which makes it a perfect stone for healing rituals, meditation, protection, and channeling. It is also useful for storing and retrieving energy or thoughts. Quartz is also a good tool for energizing other crystals.

 

 

How to use quartz in your day to day life:

Bedroom:

Due to it's ability to balance, quartz is excellent for harmonizing and balancing one's environment. Set one in your bedroom on the nightstand to clear away negative energy and is great for dream recall and dream work. 

Work:

Bust out a quartz on your desk at work to dispel negativity, purify your personal work space, and amplify creative thought and inspiration. Setting some quartz nearby if you are studying can also be beneficial as quartz also clarifies thought, concentration, and can help with retaining what you are trying to learn.

Love:

Quartz can even help out in your love life by balancing energies so it wouldn't hurt to stash one in your purse or top your outfit off with a quartz necklace on your next hot date!

Yoga:

Quartz is great for meditation as it helps to clear your mind and purify your environment. It is associated with the crown chakra and works to balance and energize all chakras.

Healing:

Quartz is a Master Healer stone and an excellent all purpose crystal healing tool. It is said to amplify reputed to be particularly effective for food poisoning, fatigue, arthritis, bone injuries, and depression among many other troubles.

 

 

After learning all of this, I finally understand why I coveted these precious gems so much all of my life. As I continue expanding my collection, I find more new and inspiring ways to display them in my favorite spaces and include them in my outfits on a daily basis. You will seldom see me without a quartz necklace or ring on.

One last thing- If your quartz were to break, make sure to bury it in the ground as it signifies that you have learned everything you can from that piece and it signifies time to move on to another new quartz piece!

One of our very own Urbanization girls and guest blogger Gennifer Rose traveled to Austin, TX to attend the Texas Style Council blogging event!

TXSC is an annual event where female bloggers from all over the country gather to re-focus and connect with like-minded creative women. This event strengthens the bonds and relationships within the blogger community to support and learn from each other. Blogging is an area of the industry that is growing very quickly and it is vital to stay in touch to know what’s trending and coming next.  

The agenda is full of discussion groups, workshops and inspirational speeches from fashion industry leaders.  The women learn and teach each other while having a blast! 

 

 

 

The conference is themed as a glam camp and it takes place at Camp Texlake. Campers sleep in cabins and do DIY projects around a campfire at night.  

The ladies let the creative energy flow with DIY fun such as painting wooden beads and decorating canvas tote bags!

 

For every activity in which a camper participates, they earn a button! Campers had a competition to see who could earn the most buttons! 

 

Camp was set in the beautiful countryside in real log cabins!

The organization loves supporting small businesses and some amazing shops had some cool trunk shows! 

 

Gennifer had a great time and plans to stay in touch and collaborate with the inspirational bloggers she met!

At Urbanization we are all about living a natural healthy lifestyle. We have discovered that the pursuit of emotional and physical well-being is not only necessary but a lot of fun!

In an effort to satisfy our appetite for curiosity, we recently attended an essential oils workshop lead by a certified Hollistic Wellness Coach. She spoke about some of the many benefits of using essential oils in your daily life. These oils have been used by ancient cultures for centuries and have recently had a resurgence in modern culture.   They are completely natural and can be substitutes for synthetic pharmaceutical drugs. Essential oils have antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties among many other benefits!

 

 

Top 2 Ways to Use Essential Oils:

 

Aromatically – you can do this either with a diffuser or with your own hands. Apply some drops on your hands and rub the oil into your skin. Then cup your hands over your mouth and nose. Take deep breaths and breathe in the aromatic scents. This is the fastest way to receive the benefits because it immediately enters your system.

 

Topically- Because of the potency of essential oils, it is recommended to dilute them with a vegetable based oil such as almond, coconut or jojoba. Direct contact could burn your skin or cause an adverse reaction. You will also get the added benefit of skin moisturizer from the vegetable based oil.

 

One of the best ways to topically apply essential oils is directly to the bottom of your feet. The pores in this area are the largest and your skin will act like a sponge and absorb the oil. The skin is less sensitive in this area as well so you can avoid skin reactions.

We all have busy schedules and sometimes our morning routine doesn’t leave much room for styling our outfits. But it’s those last simple touches that really make an outfit standout. One simple way of streamlining the process is organizing your jewelry in a way that’s easily accessible. Jewelry storage can also double as décor, especially if you do it the way we do at Urbanization. We’ve come up with some nifty ways to make our jewelry double as decoration!

 

If you’re limited on surface space, hanging on the wall is a great solution.  Picture frames can be a great way to showcase statement necklaces!

One of the mantras we follow at Urbanization is taking care of your body and being are the keys to happiness and a well balanced life.  We are only given one body and it's important to take care of it.  When you live with healthy habits you look at feel your best!  Here are some of our top tips for a great start to 2015!

 

Set goals and hold yourself accountable – keep a fitness journal with weekly goals and progress notes. If your goal is to run a marathon, set a goal to increase the miles you can run every week, then write it down. Putting goals on paper makes you more accountable and it’s all the more rewarding when you accomplish them!

 

 

Spread the word! - if you tell people about your plans and goals, you are much more likely to follow through. It will hold you accountable and force you to be true to your word. Rally your troops and they will be there to motivate and support you.

 

Small changes will lead to big results - You’re aiming to make healthy habits that become a part of your everyday life. Start small and take it one day at a time. Examples could be switch whole milk for skim, take the stairs instead of the elevator or swap a donut for yogurt and granola for breakfast.

 

 

Stay motivated with rewarding yourself – you deserve to be compensated for your hard work. Treat yourself when you accomplish your goals! Take that vacation or buy that necklace you’ve been keeping an eye on.

 

 

Gear up! - nothing motivates me more than wanting to wear my new workout clothes or try out my new yoga mat. If you look the part you will feel the part! She's a Wanderer; Outfit Inspiration for the Wanderer in You. February 05 2014, 0 Comments

This past weekend I was able to take a trip down to Big Sur, California. If you haven't been there, it's on the coast of California. Highway 1 is one of the most amazing drives you could ever take. The views of the ocean are spectacular and the vast ocean views really put things into perspective for me.

Hiking has always been a huge hobby of mine. I always feel most at peace near the ocean and around nature. Above I wore the most simple yet cute outfit for hiking; Dear John boyfriend denim, ankle boots, and a flannel to top it all off. 

I love taking trips like this because it really inspires me in so many ways as well as inspires my outfit choices. 
If you decide to stop by Big Sur, be sure to go to Nepenthe. It's the most beautiful restaurant that looks over the pacific ocean. Their food is incredible and the view is unbeatable!
Here's some outfit ideas I came up with that are easy and comfortable if you're considering taking a long drive to a inspirational destination yourself. 

 

This first one was on the drive to down to Big Sur. Ripped boyfriend Denim new in shop, a basic white tank with a bralette, and a tribal cardigan. Boyfriend denim and geometric patterns are going to be HUGE trends this spring so be sure to grab yours at our store before they run out!

This next one was for our hike. I brought along with me my slouchy beanie and fingerless gloves to keep warm on our rainy hike. We only have a few left in store, so be sure to grab yours soon!

Morning Yoga for Beginners in Under 10 Minutes! January 17 2014, 1 Comment

Rise and shine! It happens to me every morning; the terrible struggle to get out of bed.  Between my cozy warm bed, fat purring cat, and soft sheets the LAST thing I want to do is get out of bed.

But my pesky alarm clock wont let up so i reluctantly remove my now disgruntled cat from my chest and roll out of bed into what I call RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN TO PUT ON WARMER CLOTHES BECAUSE NOW I'M FREEZING COLD. I thought to myself, there has to be a better way to wake up in the morning.

 So, I don't have a solution to the imminent freezing sensation of getting out of bed. But when I do, you will all be the first to know. 

BUT as i was perusing Pinterest (my absolute FAVORITE website) I came across some daily morning yoga posses. 

I'm the kind of person who sleeps until the LAST possible moment, so my first thought was, I do NOT have time for morning yoga. But I hated the grumpy mood I would be in more than taking 10 a few minuets to stretch out before my shower.  

 

So, here it is to you, my final list of my favorite yoga stretches to start off your day. These are BEGINNER poses, because lets be honest, the majority of us don;t feel like being a contortionist first thing in the morning, and IF you do, I tip my hat to you!

 

Hold each pose for 30 seconds and repeat on the opposite side when necessary. Make sure to focus on your breathing. Count on the inhale and breathe out all tension and stress on the exhale. 

 

 

Now waking up is slightly more tolerable, and I can start my day on a positive note! Enjoy and happy stretching!

Day 1- Wanderlust
Well, after being up for 24 long hours due to traveling I still had some time to kill once i reached my hotel and before I had to go to sleep. Naturally, my first question was, "is there any internet?" My second was, "where do the locals go?" I couldn't wait to get my first taste of true Italian life.



The man at the front desk gave me the quick rundown of where I needed to go so I dropped my bags off in my room, and hit the town. My outfit was perfect for the flight as well as an evening stroll: boots skinny jeans by Genetic Denim, a simple white tank, my racerback bralette and my Rising Tides Hooded Cardigan.


This fountain in a small plaza a few blocks from my hotel was the first place I went and saw the locals drinking, playing cards, reading etc. THIS is where i saw the true fashion of Italy. Its not much different from what we have in California from a ladies perspective. The same colors and styles are trending such as the ankle boot and the rust red color. As for the men, I've never seen such finely dressed men, not even in San Francisco. These men dress just as good if not better than the women!



I was so inspired, regardless of exhaustion. Everything from the cobblestone paths to the windows to the fashion. All of it just got my creative brain flowing. Everything here is so fresh yet so old. Fresh cut flowers are in all the windows and on the dinner tables.



The attention Italians put into detail is fascinating and astonishing. You see it everywhere from their buldings to their food but most importantly their fashion. Needless to say I was excited to see what fashion I would see the next day. Exhausted beyond belief I finished my glass of wine and headed home, to rest up for what the next day would have in store.
